Where does a fire escape lead? Can it really save lives? Is it, in fact, a way out of danger? These questions are at the heart of the 17 episodes in The Fire Escape Stories, Volume II, a collection that builds upon the nine tales in The Fire Escape Stories, Volume I.
In Volume II, it is the early 1960s. The fire escape in Brooklyn has always been there for twin cousins Sally-Boy Boccanera and Mike Burns. It is where they share beers, swap stories, take girls, and confront one another. And it remains a sanctuary-in-waiting as the boys grow. But as their lives change, can the fire escape provide all the safety and answers they need?
Slowly, the boys see distinctly different worlds emerging. Sometimes together, and at other times on their own, they confront the emotional confusion of adolescence and grapple with their choices, decisions, and directions. Other people enter the boys’ lives, impacting their closeness to one another and offering new paths for them to consider…for better or for worse.
Along the way, the boys experience laughter, sorrow, and change…and each realizes he must make a life-altering decision
Does he take the fire escape? Or does he choose a different route?

The Fire Escape Stories Volume II edition by Chuck Cascio Literature Fiction eBooks

Sally-Boy and Michael Burns’ mothers may have been sisters and the cousins born a minute apart but Michael’s father has escaped Brooklyn to work for the US Secret Service dragging his son away from the influence of a neighbourhood shadowed by the Sicilian Mafia. The stories are told from Michael’s point of view.

In Virginia there’s a bit of culture shock. His mother’s friends refer to her spaghetti sauce as red gravy, Michael finds grits taste like mud pies. Back in Brooklyn he refers to his tomboy neighbour back home as Jimmy. Her brother Randy is a southern red-necked racist.

Although their childhood bonds still hold the cousins interests begin to diverge. Whereas Mike excels in school Sally-boy has lost interest in scholarship and is drifting rapidly toward a more profitable life of crime. His mafioso investors are draining the lifeblood from his father’s bakery while his new girlfriend is agitating for a move from their Brownstone tenement home.

The Fire Escape Stories Volume II edition by Chuck Cascio Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Fire Escape Stories Vol II is a fascinating reflection of not just the carefully crafted characters, but of a tumultuous time in US history–with the two teen protagonists' interests and influences changing as they grow up separately; one in New York City and the other in Washington DC. That is an aspect of this series I particularly enjoy–the relationship between NYC and DC during the 1960's that the author acutely observes through the characters' experiences. Very much looking forward to the novel.
the continuing story of the brother-cousins dealing with their different life paths as they get older grabs and holds your attention. Now I want to read what happens next.
This wonderful book brought back many memories of my own family's move from Brooklyn to Northern Virginia in the early 60's. From the perspective of a child, it is both a terrifying and exhilarating experience. And that is also much like the move from childhood to adolescence. This book captured those feelings and conflicts so well, and it also brought the turbulence of the 60's to life. I highly recommend it.
I liked volume I and LOVED volume II! This book is fast paced and entertaining, moving back and forth between Mike’s old life and new. I appreciate stories that make me feel like I’m really in the head of the character. And this definitely does! The reader experiences the emotions and struggles of youth and growing up. That lack of full control and understanding because we’re not adults yet, something we all can identify with. The dialogue is rich and humorous and brought me back to my own teenage years of debates and heavy exchanges with friends. I could truly picture the fire escape; the air, the rust, the tension, the sounds and smells of the neighborhood. The author carefully weaves in both the cultural and political issues of the sixties with great feeling. Social awareness and economic differences are illustrated with grit. Truly an enjoyable read that has me excited to experience what’s next in The Fire Escape Belongs In Brooklyn.
I really enjoyed following these kids, through both books and many thought provoking times. The differing upbringings gave a wider look at the times and i would really like to follow them further into life. They pop up in my mind at odd times and i wonder where they are and how they are dealing with the strange times in America right now. Well written with totally believable characters,
i recommend these two books highly
These comments are a repeat of those made for Volume One of the Fire Escape Stories.
An exposition of the hard realities of life during the decade of the 60s in Brooklyn, NY and Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. The story is told from the context of two boys growing up together sharing their life experiences on a tenement fire escape in Brooklyn. The Fire Escape Stories tell the complete story together as Vol one and two. The author skillfully points out the de facto slavery in 1960 America is not only white on black but also includes white ethnic exploitation of working class people in urban New York. The struggle of good over evil has a strong ally in a two parent family that provides a ray of sunshine in this somewhat harsh look at life. These books tell the story in multiple episodes that make for an entertaining and fast paced trip through time. A great look at life in the 60s for those who lived during that decade as well as for those too young to remember that turbulent time.
The maturation of Mikey and Sally-Boy from boys to men in vol. 2 nicely follows the time period of the (somewhat) more peaceful 1950s into the time the country was turned upside down in the 1960s. Again we see the fantastic character development of the two cousins where one who is headed towards a different track in life is excelling in (then) rural N. Virginia, while the other is headed towards a more negative path stuck in Brooklyn. Both get together through the story, with Mikey traveling back to Brooklyn frequently. But which each subsequent trip, not only does Sally seem different as he grows deeper into crime, but that Brooklyn itself to Mikey seems darker, less friendly, with vivid descriptions of streetlights, smells and the parks. Not that Virginia doesn't have its own problems, still feeling the effects of Jim Crow South.

As the boys develop into teenagers the story is interspersed with the events of the 60s assassinations; Vietnam; civil rights movement. And it is interesting to read the different takes on current events from the boys' perspective, which is a great barometer showing how much they are growing apart.

Vol. II is darker, but also more thought provoking dealing with much more serious subject matter. However, again the writing is fantastic and the characters and scenery jump from the pages. It is a great read and very hard to put down. This was before my time, so I imagine if you were coming of age during this difficult part of American history, it will mean even more.
